Latest trademark filed by Toyota hints off-road concept
August this year, Toyota has stopped production of the FJ Cruiser which has been in global markets since 2006. Toyota's retro-styled SUV has been discontinued in some markets and, in our earlier report, Toyota Motor Philippines will run out the remaining stocks and orders of the FJ Cruiser until the end of the 2016.
While the FJ Cruiser rides off into the sunset, it appears that Toyota is planning a successor for the off-roader. In a latest development, the automaker has recently filed an application to trademark the name FT-4X. According to Autoguide.com, the trademark filed by Toyota is for “automobiles and structural parts”. The application for the name trademark was dated October 10, 2016 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The prefix FT (Future Toyota) also hints that the name will be used for a concept vehicle. Examples of these include the FT-86, which became the Toyota 86, and the FT-1, which is believed to be the next-gen Supra. Meanwhile, the suffix 4X suggests that the possible concept will be four or all-wheel drive. With the trademark still in its earliest stages, details are still scarce surrounding Toyota's latest nameplate. With no developments on the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado and 4Runner, the platform the current FJ utilizes, the FT-4X could also serve as a preview for Toyota's future SUVs.
