Toyota Iloilo Update: 2016 Toyota Fortuner, Innova get ASEAN NCAP 5 stars

The ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) has announced that Toyota Iloilo's new Toyota Fortuner and Innova variants equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) have achieved the maximum five-star rating in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) tests.

The Toyota Innova managed a score of 14.10 in the AOP test for a five-star rating. However, as per ASEAN NCAP regulations, only vehicles equipped with ESC are eligible to receive the maximum rating — variants without ESC get a lesser four-star score.

For Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Innova managed 76% compliance overall, with the percentage enough for a four-star rating. Assembled in Indonesia, the Innova tested was also equipped with ISOFIX child-seat anchors and top tethers fitted as standard.

The Toyota Fortuner, on the other hand, was rated but not physically tested. ASEAN NCAP explains that it was provided with “technical evidence from Toyota that it has comparable occupant protection with identical design and similar restraint system for crashworthiness as the Hilux.” The seven-seater SUV is based on the new Hilux pick-up truck.

This has led to the Fortuner being exempted from any actual crash tests. It carries over the Hilux’s a 14.53 score for AOP – good enough for a full five-star rating. As such, it also scores the same four-star, 71% compliance for COP.

But as per the Innova, the Fortuner’s five-star rating is only for vehicles equipped with Electronic Stability Control. Those without the active safety feature do not quality for full marks, and therefore settle for just a four-star rating.
